You make a difference in the lives of people with ALS
ALS is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord, and slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe on its own. Among the challenges that come with ALS is the struggle to continue everyday activity in the same way people affected by ALS have done their whole lives up until their diagnosis. With your support, we can change their entire experience with ALS.
As ALS takes away a person's ability to move, equipment like silverware grips and clothing pulls helps with simple daily tasks that many people take for granted. People with ALS also require more advance equipment like eye gaze communication tablets when ALS takes away their ability to speak on their own. You can give families a much needed glimpse of hope that they can find balance and regain control in the midst of all the devastating changes that come with this disease.
When you support the Ice Bucket Bash, you help families gain back their independence through programs including our loan closet with durable medical equipment that makes eating, clothing, bathing and sleeping easier; assistive technology to automate switches, lights and doors; and respite care to give much needed relief to caregivers.
The ALS Association St. Louis Regional Chapter provides comprehensive services to people with ALS and their families in eastern Missouri and central and southern Illinois. These services, all free of charge are offered to provide relief to the physical, financial and emotional burden of ALS.
